Ice fishing is one of the rarest forms of fishing, with most having not tried it. It is imperative, before the procedure occurs, to ensure that the frozen ice is stable, for your safety. On a frozen lake or river, one chisels or picks a hole into the ice. It is recommended that the hole should be approximately a foot in diameter. It is not wise to make anything larger as there is a risk of falling in the freezing water. This method of fishing presents an opportunity unlike any summer fishing activities. Firstly, it occurs in the winter season.
This season means that dedicated fishermen do not have to suffer in the hot rays of the sun, nor do they have to battle with other fishermen, as ice fishing is a fairly isolated activity. In reference to comfort and environment, there are additionally less insects. However, these advantages aside, preparation is an absolute must for this task. As the weather is so cold, one must be adequately dressed to combat the conditions. The wardrobe staples for this activity include any clothing article made of wool, winter boots, gloves, and hats. Insulated jackets are a good idea for this type of weather.
There may be more equipment required for this type of fishing over other types of fishing. This includes a chair, necessary to sit on whilst participating in this event. A bucket stocked with bait should also be supplied, as should a gaff hook. As the weather is biting cold, a hook disgorger should be useful to remove catch from the water without forcing your hands to suffer the temperature. A net is also imperative in this task.
It should also be noted that any transport vehicles that were used in the process of reaching your destination, should not be parked or left on the ice as they do present a risk. The pressure from the weight of the vehicles can cause the ice to crack and break, and falling into the water beneath the surface is an unpleasant and hazardous experience. Alternatively, some places that offer ice fishing trips or ice fishing tours have specialised heated huts or tents that allow one to fish in luxury.
As well as these luxuries, some people now use underwater video cameras in order to track their catch before they take the bait, or, for viewing pleasure. The types of fish that can be caught include perch, various types of trout and whitefish among others. These can be caught for recreation and released back into the water, or in some cases, they are caught in order to be consumed. This is all dependent on the rules and regulations concerning this event in each area. Ice fishing is a different kind of fishing and presents a way in which one can enjoy a peaceful time fishing at their own pace.
